Competition Map

Fell orienteering map, scale 1:25,000, contour line interval 5 meters. The basis for the competition map is the terrain database of the Finnish Land Surveying Institute and the fell orientation maps from 2015 and 2017. The map was made by Routamap Oy. Minor changes have been made by the track master.

The competition terrain has a variety of roads and paths. Some of the snowmobile routes in the competition area of the first day are depicted in the map by a vehicle track symbol, and they are clearly visible in the terrain. The clearest of the outdoor trails and the skiing slopes in the second day’s competition area are depicted with a road symbol.

Areas marked with gray rock color on the map are not always uninterrupted rock formations, but a number of small rock areas. Some of the streams have dried up and are difficult to spot in the terrain – read the contour lines and look at the surface vegetation.

The maps are supplied in plastic covers.

Series and distances

You can find the competition series and course lengths as well as the estimated elevation meters in the pdf file that opens here

Terrain

The competition terrain is mainly open fells and forested slopes allowing for fast pace. At the edges of the open fell areas visibility is reduced by fell birches. In open fell areas low growing shrubs reduce speed. On the first day, the tracks have river crossings. The crossing points are marked on the map. If rainfall prior to the competition does not exceed average levels, river crossings are also possible elsewhere. The terrain has a variety of different level trails. The biggest height differences are about 200 meters. The terrain is mainly located in Urho Kekkonen National Park.

Prohibited areas

Prohibited areas are marked on the map and partly demarcated in the terrain.
